Hawks are investigating attempted murder and robbery.
The Hawks in Gauteng have confirmed the identity of a man who died after explosives detonated during a failed cash-in-transit heist in Thokoza.
The man was part of a group of armed suspects who attempted to rob a cash van in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Phola Park Extension 5.
Police reports revealed that the suspects used a silver BMW to ram the van at the intersection of Khumalo and Murubisi streets.
One suspect exited with live explosives and tried to detonate them near the van. However, the device exploded prematurely.
Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said the blast severely injured the suspect, dismembering him and killing him on the spot.
Graphic images of the aftermath, including a dislocated leg, quickly spread on social media.
Hawks identify suspect killed in the blast
Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the case was now under their jurisdiction. Although Forensic Pathology Services didn’t recover body parts directly at the scene, remains were later discovered on private property and a nearby veld.
“Identification was made possible with help from the suspect’s family,” Mogale confirmed. “He died from the explosion while attempting to blow open the cash van.”
Investigators are pursuing cases of attempted murder and armed robbery. As of now, no arrests have been made.
Suspects fled with nothing after failed robbery
Despite the violent attempt, the suspects failed to steal any money. They fled the scene in three vehicles, leaving behind the silver BMW used to ram the van. Captain Sibeko confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
The Gauteng cash-in-transit heist explosion is one of many violent robberies that have plagued the province in recent months. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
The Hawks are continuing their investigation into the armed robbery and attempted murder charges.
