The Gauteng police have opened an inquest into the death of 11-year-old Jayden-Lee Meek, whose body was discovered in the stairwell of his Fleurhof apartment complex on Wednesday, a day after he went missing.

According to The Citizen, the discovery has sparked outrage and grief in the Johannesburg community, with residents demanding swift answers and accountability.

Jayden-Lee was last seen on Tuesday afternoon after being dropped off by his school transport at Swazi’s Place, the gated complex where he lived. His mother, who was working from home, grew alarmed when he failed to return inside.

A search involving neighbors, community leaders, and police ensued but proved futile until a resident found his body at 6:05 a.m. on Wednesday. “The child was still warm when we found him,” a family member disclosed anonymously.

Autopsy awaited amid suspicions of foul play

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed the boy’s mother rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

While the cause of death remains unclear, Masondo stated, “An inquest docket has been opened, but this could transition to a murder investigation depending on forensic findings.” A preliminary autopsy is underway, with results expected within 48 hours.

The case has been escalated to Gauteng’s provincial office, with seasoned detectives assigned to investigate. “This is a case we take very seriously. We will leave no stone unturned,” Masondo emphasized. However, tensions flared as residents accused police of delaying a door-to-door search of the complex. “The police don’t want to search the units. How can they ignore potential evidence?” a community member told reporters.

Masondo urged patience, stating, “We understand the anger, but we ask the community to let us do our jobs without interference. Rushing could compromise the investigation.” The Florida Community Policing Forum pledged support, saying, “Our hearts break for Jayden’s family. We will ensure this investigation is thorough and respectful.”
