Six suspected cash-in-transit, CIT, robbers were killed in a dramatic shoot-out with police in Laudium, Tshwane, Gauteng, on Tuesday morning.

The incident unfolded when law enforcement intercepted the CIT robbery gang, who were allegedly on their way to rob a cash van in Atteridgeville.

National police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, confirmed the details of the operation.

Police attempted to stop the suspects’ vehicles when the shoot-out ensued. Four firearms were seized, and one suspect was arrested,” she said. The suspects, heavily armed and traveling in multiple vehicles, reportedly opened fire on the police, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.

IOL reports that six of the alleged robbers were fatally wounded during the confrontation.

A growing trend of cash-in-transit heists

CIT robberies have become a significant concern in South Africa, with criminals often using high-powered weapons and sophisticated tactics to target armored vehicles. According to recent crime statistics, such heists have increased by 15% over the past year, prompting law enforcement to intensify efforts to combat these crimes.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has established specialized units to track and apprehend suspects involved in these high-stakes robberies.

Community members in Laudium expressed mixed reactions to the incident. “It’s scary to think these criminals were so close to our homes, but we’re grateful the police acted swiftly,” said one resident, who asked to remain anonymous. Another local added, “These criminals are becoming bolder, and it’s about time they face the consequences.”
