According to reports, three people were killed in a drive-by shooting on Monday morning in Soweto, Gauteng.

Attackers shot the victims in Mofolo Central, near Zule Drive and Nape. Police received reports of the shooting at around 8 a.m. Authorities believe the suspects fired from a silver-grey vehicle at a Toyota Corolla, killing the three men. The victims, moreover, belonged to a local taxi association, and the incident is believed to be taxi-related violence.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Noxolo Kweza, confirmed that officers launched a triple murder investigation. “We will investigate all possibilities,” Kweza said, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the inquiry. The police have not released further details on the suspect vehicle or potential motives.

Traffic Disruptions and Diversions in Mofolo Central

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) also confirmed the incident. JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla reported that traffic in the area came to a standstill following the shooting. “Law enforcement and emergency services are on the scene. We advise motorists to avoid Mahalefele Road towards Mofolo Central.

Authorities have diverted traffic along Machaba Drive and Mageza Street. Consequently, motorists are advised to avoid Mahalefele Road towards Mofolo Central. Alternative routes include Mncube Drive, Leselinyana, and Kinini Street from Dube and Machaba Drive from Zulu Drive.

Fihla also warned of potential road closures and increased congestion as authorities manage the scene.

Police Request for Public Assistance in Investigation

Police are urging anyone with information to assist in the investigation to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111. Alternatively, people can send anonymous tip-offs via the MySAPS App, available for download on any smartphone.

In a separate incident, gunmen shot and killed four people in Gugulethu, Cape Town, on Friday, April 4. Police spokesperson Colonel André Traut confirmed the mass shooting occurred just after 8 p.m.

Authorities found the victims, believed to be in their twenties, with multiple gunshot wounds in NY 3A. They are still working to determine the motive behind the killings, and they have not made any arrests. Crime scene experts continue to gather evidence as the investigation proceeds.
