Truck Driver Plows Into Crowd, Kills Two During Protest at Diepkloof Hostel

Key Points:

  • Fatal Protest: A protest over hostel land ownership in Diepkloof turned deadly, leaving two people dead.
  • Truck Incident: A truck driver, trying to escape looters, struck protesters and caused multiple casualties.
  • Community Concern: Residents now demand answers about how government-owned land ended up in private hands.

JOHANNESBURG — Violence erupted in Diepkloof, Soweto, on Monday during a protest over alleged privatization of government land. A truck plowed into a crowd, killing two people near the Diepkloof Hostel.

One of the victims, a refuse collector, died after a truck struck him just meters from the hostel. Another person also died after a second truck hit them in the same area. Several others sustained injuries during the incident.

Police Investigate After Truck Driver Allegedly Tried to Flee Looters

Police spokesperson Col. Mavela Masondo said the truck driver tried to flee when looters targeted his vehicle. In doing so, he drove into a crowd of protesters and injured multiple people.

Masondo added, “We are going to obtain a statement from him, as he hit people. He is cooperating and telling us what transpired.”

Protest Sparked by Alleged Privatization of Government Hostel Land

Residents said they organized the protest after hearing that parts of the hostel — long considered public property — now belong to private individuals. This shocking discovery triggered widespread concern in the community.

The Diepkloof Hostel protest deaths have intensified frustrations about unclear land ownership. One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, explained their concerns.

“We were shocked to learn that part of the hostel is now privately owned,” the resident said. “We don’t know what’s going to happen next. If those claiming ownership try to evict us, we have nowhere to go.”

The resident emphasized the need for answers. “We want the government to clarify how this happened. How can an individual claim government land?” they asked.

Community Demands Government Transparency

Community leader Sbongiseni Khoza echoed those concerns. He said the land dispute has already halted important renovation projects.

“Renovations have come to a standstill,” Khoza stated. “The government cannot proceed with upgrades because of this ownership confusion.”

The Diepkloof Hostel protest deaths have sparked urgent calls for transparency. Community members are demanding that officials explain how a private individual acquired public property.

Police have launched a full investigation. Authorities have promised to provide more information as the situation unfolds.
