Ferrel Govender fights for bail in Durban High Court
Tuesday morning, the case was heard. Govender, 40, who is charged with murder, did not show up for the hearing.
Shailen Singh, a 32-year-old businessman from uMhlanga, was shot and killed in a parking lot on December 29, 2024, and Govender is charged with his murder. According to the State, Singh had an affair with Govender’s girlfriend and his murder was related to a personal conflict.
According to Iol, the prosecution was represented by Senior State Advocate Krishen Shah, who contended that the court had good reason to refuse bail. He claimed that the State had a solid case against Govender and that it was not wrong to deny him bail.
Alleged affair linked to businessman’s fatal shooting
Under the direction of KwaZulu-Natal lawyer Ravindra Maniklall, Govender was defended by senior counsel Michael Hellens. In an attempt to have him released pending trial, his legal team is contesting the initial bail decision.
Govender’s younger brother Darren Govender, who is also a co-accused, was spotted in the courtroom throughout the proceedings. Darren, who faces additional accusations related to the case, was given R200,000 bail.
A date for the appeal’s judgment delivery was not specified by the court. Ferrel Govender will be held until the start of the trial if bail is refused.
Due to conjecture on the motive and the purported love triangle that resulted in the deadly shooting, the case has attracted public attention. Whether Govender is freed under tight circumstances until trial or stays in jail will depend on the court’s final bail judgment.
