Deadly Shootout on KwaZulu-Natal’s M4 Highway Leaves Multiple Fatalities

KEY POINTS

  • Multiple fatalities reported after a violent shootout between police and suspects on KwaZulu-Natal’s M4 highway, with the scene still under investigation.
  • Eyewitnesses describe chaotic gunfire, leading to road closures and traffic disruptions as authorities work to secure the area.
  • Police have not confirmed officer casualties, but the incident highlights rising violent crime in the region, prompting calls for stronger law enforcement measures.

Multiple people have been shot dead following a violent confrontation between police and armed suspects on the M4 highway near the Old Airport in KwaZulu-Natal.

According to ALS Paramedics, the southbound lane of the M4 has been closed near the Merebank off ramp as authorities secure the crime scene.

The situation is still unfolding, and emergency services are on high alert,” said an ALS spokesperson. Witnesses reported hearing sustained gunfire, with some describing the scene as “chaotic and terrifying.”

Local motorists caught in the crossfire

Local motorists caught in the crossfire recounted harrowing experiences. One driver, who asked to remain anonymous, stated, “I saw police vehicles chasing a speeding car before shots were fired. People were ducking behind their cars—it was like something out of a movie.”

While the exact number of fatalities remains unconfirmed, preliminary reports from IOL suggest that at least five individuals, including suspects, were killed.

Police have not yet confirmed whether any officers were among the casualties.

The shootout follows a recent surge in violent crime in the province, including the killing of an off-duty police officer in a separate robbery incident earlier this week.

Analysts warn that organized crime syndicates are becoming increasingly brazen, prompting calls for heightened police visibility and tactical response units.

As forensic teams comb the scene, motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.

The M4 is expected to remain closed for several hours, causing significant traffic disruptions.
