A murder investigation is underway after a man’s body was discovered in the mangroves along the Umgeni River on Monday.
The discovery was made around 12:40 p.m. when a member of the public flagged down a Marshall Security armed response officer on Riverside Road, reporting the body.
Upon arriving at the scene, the officer confirmed the body of a man, estimated to be around 30 years old, lying within the mangroves.
The Special Operations Team and Greenwood Park SAPS were immediately called to the site to secure the area.
The police found a trail of blood leading from the Riverside Road pedestrian walkway to the body, as well as a knife at the scene, which led authorities to suspect foul play.
According to IOL, the Greenwood Park police then opened a murder case as the investigation began.
The Metro Police Search and Rescue teams were also called in to assist with retrieving the body due to the difficult terrain.
Authorities are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. However, no suspects have been named yet.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, confirmed the discovery. Ngcobo noted that the body showed signs of bruising.
While the identity of the man has not been revealed, the investigation continues. Authorities are working to piece together the details of what led to his death.
The Greenwood Park SAPS continues to follow leads as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.
Authorities have not yet determined whether the man was a victim of a violent altercation or if other factors contributed to his death.
