At the Durban High Court on Monday, the court heard how Khumalo repeatedly stabbed Msibi more than 20 times after a heated argument at the lay-by. State prosecutors presented CCTV footage showing Khumalo’s violent actions.
Senior State Advocate Krishen Shah argued that the murder was premeditated, stating that the killing of women by intimate partners represents the most extreme form of intimate partner violence.
“This is a heinous crime,” Shah said in her closing remarks. “The murder of women by their intimate partners is a troubling reality in South Africa. Our legal system must address this issue with more stringent penalties.”
Recent research by the Medical Research Council highlights the alarming statistics surrounding intimate partner violence in South Africa.
According to the study, nearly three women are killed by their partners every day. Additionally, Shah stated that severe sentencing was necessary to both protect women’s rights and act as a deterrent against such offenses.

The intensity of work to fight against gender-based violence has increased in modern times.
Moreover, the attention has shifted to establish more severe punishment measures for people who break the law.
