KwaZulu-Natal police ensured a safe environment during the Nedbank Cup Final security operation at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
The highly anticipated match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates drew thousands of passionate supporters.
Despite the excitement, five individuals attempted to disrupt the event. Police arrested two suspects for selling match tickets illegally.
Another two were detained for pitch invasion, violating the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act. A fifth person was caught flying a drone illegally near the stadium.
Colonel Robert Netshiunda, provincial police spokesperson, confirmed that officers responded swiftly and professionally.
“The deployment and coordination were exceptional,” he said. “The arrested suspects will face legal consequences.”
Police praised for effective planning and law enforcement
Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi praised the operational effort.
He commended officers from multiple law enforcement agencies who worked from early morning until late at night to ensure a successful event.
“The Nedbank Cup Final security operation proved our capability,” Mkhwanazi said. “KwaZulu-Natal can host major events and guarantee safety for both residents and visitors.”
He acknowledged Major General Phumelele Makoba, the event’s overall commander, who led from the Venue Operational Centre.
Her real-time decisions contributed significantly to the smooth execution of the security plan.
Fans applauded for cooperation and peaceful behavior
Importantly, Mkhwanazi also thanked soccer fans for respecting the law. “Real football lovers ignored calls for chaos,” he said.
“Supporters cooperated on the roads and inside the stadium. That made a big difference.”
Intelligence officers continue to investigate individuals who encouraged disorder before the event.
Mkhwanazi assured the public that anyone found responsible for inciting violence would face legal action.
As a result, the Nedbank Cup Final ended without major incident. It stood as a testament to effective security planning, public cooperation, and KwaZulu-Natal’s ability to host high-stakes events with professionalism and precision.
