  • Authorities vow to continue cracking down on counterfeit trade.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) seized counterfeit goods worth over R90 million. As a result, this has significantly affected the trade of counterfeit goods in Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal. The police arrested 37 suspects involved in the illegal trade of fake goods in Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal. The arrests were made in a series of operations in January.

Massive Seizure of Counterfeit Items

The South African Police Service (SAPS) reported in a media statement that it seized over 70,000 counterfeit items during multiple raids. These items included counterfeit cellphones and accessories, pharmaceuticals, cigarettes, toys, clothing, and other consumables. Counterfeit trade has grown in recent years and poses serious risks to consumers and businesses alike.

Notably, the National Counterfeit Goods Unit led the operation with assistance from provincial units, the Department of Home Affairs, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs division, and brand protection agencies. They received further support from a specialized roving team under Operation Vala Umgodi. The team included Tactical Response Team (TRT) officers, Public Order Policing (POP) units, and SAPS drone pilots, who focused on dismantling counterfeit and illicit networks.

Operation Vala Umgodi Targets Multiple Criminal Activities

Although Operation Vala Umgodi primarily aimed to tackle illegal mining, the roving team extended their efforts to combat other criminal activities, including counterfeit trading. Their participation played a crucial role in disrupting counterfeit goods across multiple regions. The team’s actions reflect SAPS’s broader commitment to tackling organized crime.

Recognition for the Counterfeit Goods Unit

Furthermore, the National Counterfeit Goods Unit’s efforts did not go unnoticed. On January 26, 2025, they were named the winner of the Visible Policing Team of the Year award at the SAPS National Excellence Awards. The unit’s success in combating counterfeit trade highlights its dedication to protecting consumers and businesses.

Impact on South Africa’s Economy

With over 70,000 counterfeit items seized and 37 suspects arrested, this operation underscores SAPS’s commitment to disrupting the counterfeit trade. Authorities have made it clear that these efforts will continue as part of their ongoing fight against organized crime.

Authorities have repeatedly warned that the counterfeit and illicit goods trade harms South Africa’s economy. The production and sale of fake items undermine legitimate businesses and put consumers at risk. In addition, SAPS has vowed to continue its efforts to dismantle these illegal networks and bring those responsible to justice.
