A violent bus attack in Verulam has left a community in shock. Two armed suspects boarded a bus on Orchid Drive in Redcliffe and opened fire. They killed Brandon Lee Hasthibeer, a 31-year-old bus driver.
The suspects did not demand valuables. Instead, they fired randomly and then fled the scene on foot.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the gunfire also struck the bus conductor. Additionally, a 26-year-old pregnant woman suffered a gunshot wound to her thigh.
Emergency teams responded quickly. They rushed Hasthibeer and the conductor to a nearby hospital. Paramedics treated the pregnant woman at the scene before transporting her to the hospital in stable condition.

Police have launched a full investigation into the deadly shooting. Colonel Robert Netshiunda, spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal police, confirmed the details.
He said unknown suspects entered the bus and fired multiple rounds. Hasthibeer died at the hospital as a result of his injuries.
So far, investigators have not identified a clear motive. However, police are treating the case with urgency. They are currently pursuing leads and gathering witness accounts.

The community is preparing to lay Hasthibeer to rest. His funeral will take place tomorrow. Meanwhile, residents continue to post heartfelt messages online.
“Gone too soon, my son,” wrote Kogie Madura. “Redcliffe lost a good heart.”
Ashni Ramballi expressed sorrow and anger: “Rest in eternal peace Brandon. A kind soul who didn’t deserve this.”
Others echoed similar grief and called for justice. Many say the attack highlights the urgent need for better security.
