A 44-year-old suspect wanted for kidnapping has been recaptured in Bela-Bela, Limpopo, after escaping from Johannesburg’s Protea Magistrate’s Court.

The suspect was due in court for kidnapping charges but managed to flee before his appearance.

Once authorities learned of his escape, they launched a swift manhunt across provinces. A joint operation between the Limpopo Waterberg Flying Squad, Vision Security, and the Gauteng Provincial Organized Crime Unit led to his arrest on Thursday morning.

Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng, a police spokesperson, confirmed the success of the operation and highlighted the effectiveness of teamwork between police units.

Swift Action Leads to Arrest in Bela-Bela

After tracking the fugitive to Bela-Bela, located in Limpopo’s Waterberg District, authorities closed in on his hiding spot. The police acted quickly and arrested the suspect without incident.

Thakeng shared, “The suspect fled court before facing charges related to kidnapping, which he allegedly committed in 2025.”

Limpopo’s Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the coordination between the police teams involved in the operation. He stressed that this collaboration was key to the arrest’s success.

Following his recapture, the suspect will soon appear before the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court. He will face charges of kidnapping and escaping from lawful custody.
