Man Sentenced to 15 Years for Setting Girlfriend’s New Partner on Fire
In a tragic case of jealousy and revenge, Mathews Ballantine Chinyaka has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the brutal murder of 20-year-old Titus David Shihlangu. The crime took place in Thabazimbi, Limpopo, and shocked the local community.
Gruesome Murder in Thabazimbi
On the night of May 13, 2023, Shihlangu was with his girlfriend at Both’s squatter camp in Thabazimbi. Little did he know the danger was lurking just outside their home. Driven by jealousy over his ex-girlfriend’s new relationship, Chinyaka plotted his horrific attack. He poured flammable liquid on the shack where the couple was staying, forcing Shihlangu to step outside and investigate.
As Shihlangu ventured outside, Chinyaka acted quickly. He drenched the victim in flammable liquid before setting him alight. “The accused suddenly poured the victim with that flammable liquid and set him alight,” said police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba. The girlfriend narrowly escaped, but Shihlangu was left severely burned by fire. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Shihlangu died from his injuries.
Chinyaka Evades Arrest, Caught for Theft
For months, Chinyaka evaded law enforcement. However, his luck ran out when Hoopdal police arrested him for possession of stolen copper cables. Further investigations revealed his involvement in the murder, and Chinyaka was denied bail during his trial.
Justice Served in Thabazimbi Court
On Monday, February 3, the Thabazimbi Regional Court sentenced Chinyaka.He received 15 years for the murder of Shihlangu and an additional 12 months for violating the Immigration Act. The second sentence will run concurrently with the first.
Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the sentencing. “This verdict sends a clear message that justice will prevail. It serves as a lesson to those considering crime,” Hadebe said.
