The Groblersdal Regional Court has handed down a life sentence to a 52-year-old man convicted of raping his 11-year-old stepdaughter, marking a significant victory in the fight against gender-based violence and child abuse in South Africa.

The sentencing, delivered on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, brings closure to a case that had remained hidden for years before justice was finally served.

According to IOL, the rape crime occurred on October 30, 2019, in the rural village of Bloempoort, located in the Dennilton policing area of Limpopo.

According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the man lured his stepdaughter to a secluded house in the bush under the pretense that they would be living there. “The suspect tied the victim’s hands with a cable tie and raped her.

He then threatened to kill both the victim and her mother if she ever revealed the incident,” Ledwaba stated.

The young girl endured the trauma in silence for three years, fearing for her life and the safety of her family.

A breakthrough in 2022

The rape case only came to light in 2022 when the girl, now 14, found the courage to confide in a trusted individual about the abuse. This brave act prompted the immediate involvement of law enforcement.

Sergeant Thabitha Letladi of the Groblersdal Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit spearheaded the investigation, which led to the suspect’s arrest and subsequent prosecution.

The court found the man guilty under Section 3 of Act 32 of 2007, which deals with sexual offenses against children.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe hailed the sentencing as a critical milestone in the battle against gender-based violence.

“This sentence sends a strong message to perpetrators of such heinous crimes. We commend the investigating team and all those who played a role in ensuring justice was served,” Hadebe said.

She also emphasised the importance of community involvement in reporting such crimes and supporting victims.
