Authorities have recovered vehicle parts from the Hennops River in Centurion, believed to be from the VW Polo that three missing police officers were traveling in.
The officers—Keamogetswe Buys, 30; Boipelo Senoge, 20; and Cebekhulu Linda, 24—were reported missing after last being seen at a fuel station on the N1 highway. Their bodies were discovered in the river following an extensive search.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the front and rear bumpers, along with a reflector jacket belonging to one of the officers, were found during the search.
Experts are working to verify if these parts are indeed from the missing vehicle.
Suspicious object detected during search
Divers from SAPS Special Task Force and Search and Rescue South Africa identified a suspicious metal object approximately 4km from the N1 highway.
While it’s yet to be confirmed, authorities believe this object may be related to the missing VW Polo.
The search and recovery efforts are ongoing as investigators aim to piece together the events leading to the officers’ deaths.
Investigation into officers’ deaths continues
The three officers were traveling from Bloemfontein to Limpopo when they disappeared. After leaving the fuel station, their vehicle’s tracking device and cellphones were turned off.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has urged the public to refrain from speculation and allow the investigation to proceed without interference.
Authorities are working diligently to determine whether the incident was accidental or involved foul play.
