The number of fatalities in a head-on collision on the N4 has risen to six, the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison confirmed.
The crash occurred on Thursday between Belfast and Machadodorp, involving a bakkie and an SUV.
One victim succumbs to injuries
According to IOL, departmental spokesperson Moeti Mmusi reported that one of the injured victims died while receiving treatment in Belfast.
Initially, five people were confirmed dead, with three others sustaining serious injuries. Emergency services responded promptly to the scene of the horrific crash.
Bad weather contributes to the crash
Mmusi stated that inclement weather may have caused the accident. Heavy rain and wet conditions likely impaired visibility for motorists.
He urged drivers to follow road rules and take extra care, particularly in challenging weather conditions.
The department has been monitoring traffic as motorists travel to Easter destinations. The N3, N1, and N4 routes are among the busiest over the holiday period. Road safety concerns remain high, as this period traditionally sees increased road traffic and incidents.
