A 37-year-old individual detained in Mpumalanga received arrest for his active rape of a 60-year-old female while her grandson observed the incident.
Justice proceedings at the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court are scheduled for Monday, February 10, 2025 when the suspected offender will stand before the court.
Caught in the act
The sexual assault on the victim took place during the evening of Saturday at Hlamalani located near Bushbuckridge. A 37-year-old man apprehended by Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane after the victim met him on the way back home although both parties knew each other.
According to Ndubane the perpetrator seized the woman before attacking her. The suspect assaulted the woman when her grandson came looking for her because he discovered the man in the middle of the attack.
The suspect escaped after realizing someone watched him lend the assault. The police officers obtained direction from the grandson to search for the suspect which led them to an immediate arrest.
Police condemn the incident
The acting provincial police commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi called the attack a “disheartening incident” and gave a firm condemnation against it. Chief Zeph Mkhwanazi praised the officers for their fast action which led to the successful arrest.
The suspect will proceed to face court charges of rape alongside ongoing investigations of the case.
A 35-year-old man from Limpopo received life imprisonment after he raped and attacked a 90-year-old woman in Groblersdal during the previous year.
