A security company director in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, sold firearms, including rifles and pistols, to another security firm. He then falsely reported them as stolen, leading to his arrest.
The 53-year-old suspect knowingly submitted a false theft report. He now faces perjury charges for misrepresenting the lawful transfer of the weapons.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) Organised Crime Unit within the Detective Services in Mpumalanga uncovered the alleged fraud. They discovered it during an ongoing investigation.
Authorities verified these legally registered weapons under the new ownership. This verification prevented them from seizing the firearms.
Police investigation and possible additional charges
SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli indicated that the suspect created substantial risks to community members, while detectives explore additional charge possibilities.
The suspect is scheduled to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on March 5.
According to IOL, law enforcement officials have not ruled out further legal consequences, as the investigation is still ongoing.
Mdhluli stated that their organization remains dedicated to meting out justice through prosecution of those who perform fraudulent activities involving guns.
