South African Man Arrested at Eswatini Border with R419,000 in Cash

MPUMALANGA, South Africa — Authorities arrested a South African man at the Eswatini border after finding him carrying R419,000 in a plastic bag.The suspect, Khayalethu Cable Majola, attempted to cross the border illegally before police intercepted him.

Suspect Fails to Explain Source of Money

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lt. Col. Magonseni Nkosi said officers stopped Majola during a routine  Eswatini border check. He failed to declare the money at customs and could not explain its origin.

“When arrested, Majola failed to explain the source of the money and could not provide a valid reason for not declaring it,” Nkosi said.

Authorities immediately took him into custody and charged him with possession of suspected stolen property. During his detention, Majola allegedly tried to bribe officials to secure his release.

Bribery Attempt Leads to Corruption Charge

Nkosi confirmed that Majola’s attempt to pay for his freedom resulted in an additional charge of corruption. Officers seized the cash for further investigation and transferred the case to the Hawks’ Nelspruit-based Priority Crime Specialized Investigation unit.

“The recovered money was seized for further investigation. He was released from custody after the court granted him bail,” Nkosi added.

Court Grants Preservation Order

Investigators applied for a preservation order through the Division of the High Court in Mbombela. The court approved the request, preventing Majola from reclaiming the funds.

Nkosi confirmed that the money was eventually forfeited to the state. The decision reinforces efforts to curb financial crimes and illegal border activities.

Officials Praise Officers for Integrity

Mpumalanga Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Maj. Gen. Nico Gerber, commended officers for handling the case professionally. He emphasized the importance of refusing bribes and maintaining ethical law enforcement practices.

“The preservation order and subsequent forfeiture send a clear message to criminals that crime does not pay,” Gerber said. “We commend the officers who intercepted the suspect and refused to accept gratification.”

Authorities continue to investigate the case, urging the public to report suspicious financial activities. Law enforcement remains committed to preventing illicit transactions and ensuring accountability at border crossings.
