Cash-in-transit heists have become nearly a daily occurrence, with more than 200 robberies recorded in 2024. These heists tragically resulted in the deaths of three bystanders and injuries to 13, according to the Cash-In-Transit Association of SA (Citasa).

In response, police have intensified efforts to target the sale of illegal explosives. One such operation in Klerksdorp led to the arrest of a 21-year-old Zimbabwean man caught with explosives.
After receiving tips about his involvement in selling explosives, members of the National Intervention Unit (NIU) tracked the suspect. A chase ensued, culminating in his arrest in a bush area near a shopping mall.
