  • Police praised the conviction as a victory for justice.
  • Another elderly woman was allegedly killed by her son in Piketberg

A 31-year-old woman from North West will spend the rest of her life behind bars for the murder of an elderly woman in Mokgalwaneng, Disake.

The Mogwase Regional Court sentenced Bridgette Bojosi to life in prison on Monday for the killing of 65-year-old Anna Mokowe in March 2023.

According to police spokesperson Capt. Mpho Manyoba, Mokowe’s burned body was found at a garbage dump in the backyard of her home, covered with a carpet.

A deep stab wound to her neck was also discovered. Following an extensive investigation, police arrested Bojosi the day after the murder and charged her with murder and obstruction of justice.

Bojosi’s sentencing marks a significant victory for law enforcement. The court also declared her unfit to own a firearm, reinforcing the severity of her crime.

Police commend successful investigation

Acting North West Provincial Commissioner Maj. Gen. Patrick Asaneng praised the investigative team for their work in ensuring justice was served.

According to IOL, he highlighted the dedication of law enforcement in holding those responsible for violent crimes accountable.

“This sentencing is a strong reminder that violent crimes, especially against vulnerable individuals, will not go unpunished,” Asaneng said.

“I commend the officers, prosecution team, and everyone involved in securing this conviction.”

The case has sparked renewed conversations around violence against the elderly, with community members expressing their relief that justice was served.

Similar case raises concerns over elder abuse

The sentencing of Bojosi comes as another tragic case unfolds in the Western Cape.

In January 2025, an 81-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death by her son at a small farm in Piketberg.

According to Billy Claasen, executive director of the Rural and Farmworkers Development Organization, the woman was brutally assaulted in the early hours of a Sunday morning.

Initially, her son claimed she suffered a medical emergency. However, the hospital staff alerted police after discovering signs of severe physical abuse.

“She was admitted to Piketberg Hospital under the pretenses of a sugar attack,” Claasen said. “However, medical staff later informed authorities that it was an assault.”

The victim later died at Tygerberg Hospital, and her son has since been charged with murder.

These cases underscore ongoing concerns about elder abuse and domestic violence in South Africa.

Authorities continue to urge communities to report suspected cases of abuse and work towards protecting vulnerable individuals.
