A husband and wife have been arrested following a major police operation that uncovered an advanced hydroponic dagga lab and a stockpile of illegal ammunition in Wilgeboom, Potchefstroom.

The operation, executed by the SAPS Drug Task Team and supported by the Potchefstroom Flying Squad, took place on Friday, March 7, after officers secured a search and seizure warrant.

During the raid, officers discovered a sophisticated dagga cultivation setup that included mature plants and pre-rolled dagga cigarettes.

The severity of the situation grew as police discovered both prohibited drugs and various ammunition during the operation.

“The investigation, including processing the crime scene by forensic teams, is ongoing,” confirmed police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh. She noted that the street value of the confiscated drugs has yet to be determined.

Suspects to face court for multiple charges

The suspects who were identified as a 38-year-old male and his 36-year-old wife will face their court hearing at the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court on Monday, March 10.

According to IOL, they will face multiple charges, including the unlawful possession of ammunition and the cultivation and dealing of dagga.

The authorities have kept quiet about the identity of those arrested but their investigation continues to reveal how much they participated in drug dealing in their local area.

Major General Patrick Asaneng, the Acting Police Commissioner acknowledged the officers’ commitment and expertise during the operation.

“This successful raid sends a strong message that crime does not pay. We will continue to dismantle illegal drug networks and rid our communities of dangerous substances,” Asaneng stated.

Authorities emphasize vigilance in the fight against drugs

Police have used the opportunity to encourage the public to remain alert. They are also expected to report suspicious activities that may point to illegal drug operations.

The fight against drug dispersal requires thorough community participation to both stop the drug spread and create safer living areas.

“We urge citizens to stay vigilant and work alongside law enforcement to protect our communities.” said Asaneng

The Potchefstroom raid serves as part of a continuous national campaign to stop drug networks and disrupt illegal substances from circulating throughout the country.

Police continue to reinforce their dedication toward intensifying drug operation efforts and will arrest people under the maximum laws.

As investigations progress, authorities have encouraged anyone with additional information to come forward.
