Union Assault Viral Video: Rep, Director Clash Over Abuse

Key Points:

  • A union rep and waste director fight in a viral video.
  • The clash follows worker mistreatment complaints from waste pickers.
  • Both parties filed assault charges and will face court.

A viral union assault viral video shows a heated confrontation between Disego Leso, a union representative, and the director of Mathomo Waste Management. The video, widely circulated on social media, shows the director slapping Leso during an argument.

Leso represents the National Enterprise Works Union Ya Africa (NEWUYA). She said waste pickers complained that the director insulted them and called them “fools” and “desperate.” Therefore, she met with the workers at the company’s North West site to address their concerns.

However, the situation escalated. Leso said the director stormed into the room while she was still speaking with staff. He then allegedly struck her during the confrontation.

Union Rep and Director File Assault Charges

After the incident, Leso went to a local clinic for medical attention. She then opened an assault case against the director.

On the other hand, the director denied assaulting her. In an interview, he said the video had been edited and misrepresented what actually happened. He claimed that jealousy fueled the incident. According to him, the conflict started because he recently bought a new car.

Court Appearance Scheduled After Police Investigation

Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, the spokesperson for North West police, said both Leso and the director filed assault charges. Police are currently investigating the case.

As a result, both individuals will appear in Brits Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Importantly, the union assault viral video has reignited public concern over how companies treat waste pickers. Many activists and community leaders are now calling for improved labor conditions and managerial accountability in the waste sector.
