UPINGTON, South Africa — A Northern Cape court sentenced a 51-year-old man to seven years in prison for violating a protection order.
History of Abuse and Protection Order
The man’s partner, who shares two children with him, obtained the order in 2019 due to ongoing abuse. The order prohibited him from abusing her verbally, emotionally, or physically.
Incident Leads to Arrest
In November last year, the woman returned home after staying at a friend’s house. The accused became aggressive, hurled vulgar insults, and accused her of infidelity. She chose not to engage, walked away, and reported the incident to the South African Police Service (SAPS).
“The accused was arrested on November 19 and appeared in court on November 21,” said Mojalefa Senokoatsane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Northern Cape.
Court Conviction and Sentencing
Last month, the accused pleaded guilty and was convicted.
During sentencing, Upington District Court Prosecutor Benise Swartz presented evidence that the accused had two prior convictions for similar offenses against the same victim. Both times, he received suspended sentences.
“The State emphasized that gender-based violence (GBV) remains a persistent crisis. Women have the right to live without fear or intimidation,” said Senokoatsane.
The court also declared the man unfit to possess a firearm.
Ongoing Fight Against GBV
Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of enforcing protection orders and prosecuting repeat offenders. Police and legal experts urge victims to report violations and seek justice through the courts.
Gender-based violence remains a major issue in South Africa, prompting campaigns and legal reforms to protect vulnerable individuals. Law enforcement officials reaffirm their commitment to supporting victims and ensuring perpetrators face justice.
