On April 2, Cape Town police arrested four suspects in Khayelitsha for multiple murders and extortion.
These suspects had evaded capture for over a year before the coordinated operation took place. Several SAPS units worked together to make the arrests.
Police carried out the operation between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., involving Crime Intelligence, Khayelitsha CIMAC, Khayelitsha Detectives, and the Tactical Response Team (TRT).
Officers raided locations in Samora Machel, Wesbank, Kleinvlei, and Mfuleni, arresting four suspects between 23 and 28 years old.
Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, SAPS spokesperson, explained that the operation focused on criminals wanted for murder, attempted murder, and extortion in Khayelitsha.
He said, “The operation aimed to bring criminals to justice and neutralize those involved in violent crimes.”
Firearms and ammunition seized during the operation
During the operation, police seized several illegal firearms. Among the weapons recovered were a Luger 9mm pistol with 15 rounds, a Retay Blank 9mm firearm, a Pietro Beretta 7.65 pistol with 12 rounds, and a Glock 19 Austria pistol with 37 rounds.
Two of the suspects, aged 23 and 24, face charges for seven murders, two attempted murders, extortion, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
These two suspects had been on the run for over a year. They will now face trial alongside two other suspects, aged 24 and 30, who were arrested in April 2024 for similar charges.
The other two suspects, aged 25 and 28, face charges for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
Court appearance scheduled for April 4
The four suspects will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Friday, April 4. Their arrests mark a significant step in the fight against crime in the area, especially organized crime and gang-related violence.
This operation highlights SAPS’s ongoing efforts to target violent criminals in Cape Town. It reflects their commitment to ensuring safety in communities affected by criminal activities.
