Two Arrested in Mfuleni for Illegal Firearm Possession.

Cape Town – A recent intelligence-driven operation led to the arrest of a 36-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The Provincial Anti-Economic and Counterfeit Task Team, with Crime Intelligence, acted on a tip. They searched a house on Watford Street, Mfuleni, and found firearms at the residence. The Task Team arrested the suspects on Monday, 10 February 2025.

Search Yields Firearm and Ammunition

Upon conducting a thorough search of the premises, officers discovered a .22 revolver along with ammunition. The suspects could not provide a valid firearm license or permit for the weapon, leading to their immediate arrest. Both individuals are now in police custody and are expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court soon.

The successful operation is part of the ongoing efforts by SAPS to keep illegal firearms off the streets and reduce gun-related violence in the region. “Our goal is clear: Guns off the streets,” said a spokesperson for the South African Police Service.

SAPS Uses Drones to Enhance Crime-Fighting Efforts

In related news, drones play a vital role in South African policing. Sergeant Morekwana Monyela, a drone pilot with the SAPS Limpopo Airwing, shared his experience on how drones assist in tackling illegal mining activities and support search-and-rescue operations.

Monyela, who completed a drone operation course in 2023, uses aerial coverage to monitor mine shafts and provide real-time intelligence to officers on the ground. He explained, “If I spot anything unusual, I alert officers to ensure their safety.”

Drone Technology Revolutionizes Policing

According to police spokesperson Brig Hlulani Mashaba, drones have significantly revolutionized policing in South Africa. The technology provides real-time aerial surveillance, which helps monitor vast, inaccessible areas while reducing risks to officers on the ground.

Monyela’s ability to capture critical footage has proven instrumental in preventing criminals from fleeing or hiding evidence. His contributions to the force are invaluable, particularly in cases like the recent search for a drowning victim in Limpopo. Using his drone, Monyela successfully located the body of a victim whose vehicle had been swept away by floods, offering the family much-needed closure.

Drone Pilot Sgt. Morekwana Monyela’s Commitment to Justice

Despite the challenges of his work, Sergeant Monyela remains grounded and motivated by his dedication to his community. A father of two, he credits his success to his family’s support and passion for making a positive impact.
