The terrible murder of a fellow cop was one of many violent occurrences that Western Cape police had to deal with over the weekend.

Police officer murder investigation launched after Langa shooting

Officers were heartbroken when they found a 31-year-old female constable dead in her car on Saturday morning, according to police spokesperson Malcolm Potjie.

In Bennie Street, Langa, close to a nearby primary school, the officer, who was assigned to the Bishop Lavis police station, was discovered shot.

After finishing her shift on Friday night, Potjie stated, “she left her home in Kraaifontein with the intention of attending an evening church service in KwaLanga.”

Potjie affirmed that a murder inquiry has been launched into the matter by investigators from the Directorate for Priority Crime inquiry (DPCI).

Police are asking anyone with knowledge to come forward and help with the investigation, since they have not yet made any arrests.

According to Subcouncil Chairperson Angus McKenzie, the assassinated officer was a well-liked and esteemed member of the Bishop Lavis police force.

“Her loved ones, coworkers, and the larger police force are grieving this terrible loss, and we are sending our thoughts and prayers their way,” McKenzie added.

He underlined that there should never be any tolerance for violence against law enforcement personnel and that those who commit such acts should face severe legal repercussions.

“The full force of the law must be applied to any officer who is killed because it is terrorism,” McKenzie stated.

Police officer murder investigation raises safety concerns

He went on to say that attacks on police jeopardize public safety and confidence in the legal system because communities depend on them for protection.

He stated, “We grieve with those who knew and worked with this dedicated public servant and are deeply saddened by this senseless loss.”

As authorities respond to other violent occurrences reported in several communities this weekend, police operations in the Western Cape are still ongoing.

The officer’s passing heightens the urgency of continuing conversations about police safety and crime prevention in the province’s high-risk communities.

According to Iol, the police ministry has not yet made a public statement regarding the event, and investigators are still gathering evidence and going over security footage.

In order to make communities safer for both cops and citizens, McKenzie asked the public to cooperate with law enforcement.
