The Beaufort West police netted two suspects who had hidden an unlicensed firearm and approximately R110,000 worth of cannabis when they stopped a passenger bus during their late-night checkpoint in April 12.
Checkpoint operation and seizure
Situated at Donkin Street, the Central Karoo District Flying Squad jointly with Beaufort West police executed vehicle control at Beaufort West entrance at 11:15 PM on April 12.
The officers conducted the search on the bus at Donkin Street while it was at the location. Police discovered a concealed firearm hidden in a bag followed by 12 bundles of dagga packed within another bag during their search.
Western Cape police arrests and charges
The suspects who were later identified as related and aged 46 and 54 received their arrest at the scene after police verified the drugs belonged to them. The suspects stay under police detention while waiting for formal charges regarding firearm possession offenses and drug dealings. The prosecution will bring the defendants before a court within the upcoming future.
Increased vigilance and future operations
Police spokeswoman Sergeant Christopher Spies praised the officers for their watchful behavior while stating that the upcoming Easter weekend will see increased law enforcement activities throughout the province to stop the flow of illegal firearms and drugs and contraband materials into the area.
